UWC Current Affairs Group 2026: Is Society at Risk of Breakdown? July’s focus is “The Conservative Wave Sweeping Latin America” RSVP to Frances here.
“Latin America is in the middle of a major political shift. After years of leftist "pink tide" governments, country after country has been swinging right: Milei in Argentina, Kast in Chile, Paz in Bolivia, and most recently Fujimori's win in Peru. Analysts are split on why. Some point to crime, corruption, and economic frustration with incumbents, others to a deliberate Trump push to back conservative candidates across the region. With Brazil's high-stakes Lula vs. Bolsonaro election looming in October, the region's political map could look dramatically different by year's end.”
Fujimori’s win in Peru and the horrific earthquake in Venezuela have both moved this topic to the forefront.
July’s Current Affairs Discussion Group session will be in the form of Zoom participation or an in-person gathering (limited to 10) to enjoy tea, cakes, and snacks with a discussion of this topic. Frances will send suggested readings to those who RSVP!
