Honorary Membership

In the UWC there are three categories of membership: Regular Member; Life Member, who has completed 30 years of continuous membership in the club; and Honorary Member, who has contributed in an exceptional way to the club and/or community. The Life Members and Honorary Members have the privilege of no longer paying annual dues. It has been a while since we have chosen an Honorary Member. Shake Balian is currently our only Honorary Member. The UWC Board would like to give members the opportunity to suggest names for Honorary Membership this year. Below is the procedure to be followed.

UWC Guidelines for choosing an Honorary Member

  • An Honorary member will be a member who has given “extensive, effective service” to the club, for example sustained willingness and actual participation as a speaker, resource source, Board member, Officer, Editor, Club Representative and /or organizer of activities for or with the wider community for at least eighteen months.

  • Age is not a consideration.

  • In deference to possible future financial situations and the need to offer the widest margin possible to future Treasurers and Boards, it is recommended that the Board limit the selection to not more than one Honorary Member per year.

Procedure:

  • Members are invited to submit names of Honorary Membership candidates to Barbara Grünenfelder-Elliker, acting Vice President. The names will be published in the August Bulletin.

  • After consultation with UWC Archives, a final list of names will be presented to the Board at their September meeting. Voting will be by secret ballot.

  • The acting Vice President will communicate the result of the ballot to the President, who will then contact the elected person and announce her name at the Annual General Meeting in November.
