María de los Ángeles Lasa will present “Measuring the Silence: Producing Knowledge on a Hermit Kingdom”
How can we produce knowledge about a country where information is systematically controlled, manipulated, or entirely absent? North Korea represents an extreme case of structural censorship, where traditional sources of data —press, official statistics, and open fieldwork— are either unavailable or heavily mediated. This talk explores three complementary strategies for generating data under such conditions: direct observation during a visit to the country, the systematization of testimonies from defectors, and computational analysis of state-run media. Beyond the North Korean case, the talk invites a broader reflection on the production of data as a form of resistance: a way of making visible what was meant to be erased.
