Robert Frost, 1874-1963 is a quintessentially American poet, deeply rooted in the landscape and culture of New England. He was known for his realistic depictions of this rural world. His command of American colloquial speech together with his deft use of traditional metre and rhyme created a unique blend of poetry which set him aside from early XX th century poetic experimentalism and showed him as a genuine voice. Admired for his unadorned vocabulary, sharp observation and rich enjoyment of practical life he became accessible to a wide audience.
Although Frost's lyrics are associated with nature, his seemingly simple poems posed symbolic or metaphysical questions about the complexities of human relationship, the spiritual significance of nature and the search for meaning in life.
Frost became the most highly honoured American poet of the XXth century receiving the Pulitzer Prize for poetry four times. Other honours came steadily. He was awarded honorary degrees by Columbia, Dartmouth, Yale, Harvard and other colleges and universities.
Towards the end of his life he read one of his celebrated poems at President John F. Kennedy' inauguration.
