Continuing Education: Marcela Montes, "The Origins and Evolution of Printing in Argentina"

Visual Artist Marcela Montes will present, “The Origins and Evolution of Printing in Argentina.” Ms. Montes’s biographical profile, samples of her art, and a link to the full abstract of her presentation are here.

In brief, printmaking in Argentina occupies a unique place within the history of Latin American visual culture. More than a reproductive technique, engraving evolved into a language capable of transmitting religion, constructing national identity, documenting social realities, and expanding artistic experimentation. From the Jesuit missions of the seventeenth century to contemporary risography and sustainable printmaking practices, Argentine graphic art has continuously transformed itself while preserving its essential relationship with memory, materiality, and collective experience.

This talk proposes a chronological and thematic journey through the origins and evolution of Argentine printmaking, examining the historical moments, artistic movements, technical innovations, and cultural transformations that shaped its development. Through visual references, historical documents, and examples of major artists and workshops, the lecture seeks to demonstrate how engraving became one of the most dynamic and socially resonant artistic disciplines in Argentina.
